BESTIALITY
Michigan, USA - Joseph Hattey, 51 responded to a Craigslist ad that could cause him to end up in jail for 15 years. In January, an informant placed an ad seeking a dog or horse for sex. Hattey responded. The informant told officers s/he witnessed Hattey having sex with the 7 year-old male Bassett Hound. Hattey was dismissed from his position at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Michigan State University and charged with sodomy. The dog was removed from Hattey's custody and his since been adopted. The animal was not connected to Hattey's work at the university.
OHIO, USA - In September 2017 Scott Turner was arrested for performing oral sex on a dog he was taking care of for a friend. In March 2018, Turner was given 5 years' probation for the misdemeanor crime. Turner had only recently been released from prison after serving 12 years for multiple child sexual assault crimes involving 6, 9, and 12-year-olds. The most recent arrest resulted from Turner attempting to meet a 14-year-old boy for sex, but was arrested by an undercover officer instead.
This disturbing case is not unusual. Our research shows that nearly 35% of offenders arrested for bestiality are also sexually abusing children at the time of arrest. Another 34% collect child pornography or have a criminal history of child sexual abuse.
EXPLOITATION, PORNOGRAPHY, TRAFFICKING
Texas, USA - Andrew Sustatia, Jr. was sentenced to 27 years for bestiality and child pornography offenses. Sustatia was arrested in January 17 after a video of him having sex with a dog surfaced on the internet. Druing the investigation, officers discovered a cache of child pornography, some of were of children known to Sustatia, who admitted to posting on child porn sites as well as pay-for-play bestiality sites. Sustaita was a law enforcement officer for six years before being relieved from duty as a result of this investigation. Our research shows that 2% of animal sex abusers are employed in law forcement.
